1 Peter - Elect Exiles

We live in a context in which it is becoming increasingly difficult to live as a follower of Jesus. More and more, there is a sense from both inside and outside the church that Christians do not ‘belong’ of ‘fit’ in a modern, Western context. This is relatively new to us but is not at all new historically. In fact, we are returning to an existence that is far more similar to New Testament believers. The book of 1 Peter was written to believers who had been scattered and who were being mistreated and misunderstood for believing things that were contrary to what their contemporaries believed. We, like the Christians this letter was originally written to, are exiles and aliens living in a foreign land. Preaching through this letter will help us to understand that it is normal for Christians to suffer and feel like we don’t ‘fit’ in this world (see 4v12). We are not of this world – we are exiles – but we have been elected and sent into this world.
