Jesus is far more than an interesting or inspiring person but is God in the flesh and the one in whom all people’s deepest needs are met. The best way to understand who Jesus is, is to understand who he considers himself to be. In the Gospel of John, Jesus makes 7 “I AM” statements. The language of “I AM” as Jesus uses it, is heavily loaded with clear links to the name God uses for himself in the Old Testament. There is widespread (and accurate) understanding that Jesus was a good and kind person. What is often missed is the significance of what he claimed about himself and the boldness of those claims. Jesus does not consider himself as merely a great teacher or good person but as the God of Israel, in human flesh.
