Throughout the Gospel of Matthew, a major theme is that the long-awaited Messiah has come in Jesus; and this Jesus has brought the Kingdom of God with him. Jesus was not the kind of Messiah that many Israelites expected and were hoping for. They were longing for a mighty warrior to come and defeat the Roman Empire because that is what they thought they needed most. Instead, Jesus comes as the suffering servant that dies for the sins of the world because that is what they really needed most. Today, people are not hoping for a Messiah in exactly the same way but they are looking for hope and solutions to the problems of the world. Many people don’t really know what they want but they know they want something. What people need today is King Jesus and his Kingdom.
