The book of Exodus tells one story of how God liberated his people out of slavery in Egypt and in to being free to worship and serve God. The story is prefigured through Moses, whose name means ‘draw out’ and he is named as such after he is taken out of the river Nile and placed in to life in the royal family. The first half of the book tells the story of deliverance from slavery and the second half is the narrative of God telling Israel (through Moses) how they should live in their new freedom. Just as the book of Genesis is our origin story and therefore speaks into not just who we were but also who we are, the book of Exodus, as the continuation of that story, is also our story. More significantly though, it is the story that, more than any other, represents what has happened to us in and through Christ. We were slaves to sin and unable to liberate ourselves from that place. But God, through the death of his firstborn, has miraculously delivered us out slavery into his presence and true freedom. Our new freedom is not freedom to do what we like but freedom to live for God and be slaves of righteousness.
